The creamy chicken garlic sauce is served as a dipping sauce for the grilled chicken and is optional, but I know you will love it on your chicken! The chicken is coated in a seasoning before being grilled and has a great flavor on it’s own.
You can pour the sauce over the chicken just before serving or serve it at the table and allow your guests to use it as a dipping sauce. You do not want to put the sauce on the chicken before grilling, it is best after it is cooked.
We have used the garlic sauce for dipping with our parmesan grilled boneless chicken thighs too, it is a big hit in our house.

Ingredients
This grilled chicken with creamy garlic sauce recipe has a homemade seasoning and a homemade creamy sauce. They are both super simple to make!
The chicken and seasoning
- Boneless skinless chicken breasts – try to use chicken breasts that are all the same thickness for an even cook time. You can pound them down to an even thickness.
- Oil – we prefer olive oil or avocado oil, but you can use your favorite.
- Parsley – we used dried, but you can use fresh. If using fresh up it to a Tablespoon.
- Oregano – we used dried, but you can use fresh. Also up this to 1 Tablespoon if using fresh.
- Paprika
- Onion powder
- Garlic powder
- Salt and pepper
The creamy chicken garlic sauce
This can be used as a dipping sauce for many different foods, not just grilled chicken. It is best prepared at least a half hour before serving, but we like to make it about an hour before. It gets more flavor as it sits in the fridge.
- Mayo – mayo is best, do not use Miracle Whip for this garlic sauce.
- Greek yogurt – we use whole milk plain Greek yogurt, but you can use a lower fat if you prefer.
- Garlic cloves – fresh minced garlic gives it an amazing flavor, but you can use garlic powder in place of the cloves. You would use about half a teaspoon of garlic powder.
- Lemon juice – you can use fresh lemon juice or from the bottle. We used fresh lemon, you will need half a lemon.
- Salt and pepper
Making grilled chicken breasts with creamy garlic sauce
This grilled chicken with garlic sauce recipe is really easy to make so there is nothing complicated here, no worries!
The sauce
You want to make the chicken garlic sauce first so it gives the garlic time to flavor the sauce throughout since you are using fresh garlic. I make it about an hour ahead of time for flavor.
As a note for the garlic, if you carefully smash it on your cutting board before mincing (or chopping) it releases more flavor. If you have a garlic crusher, you can crush the garlic into the sauce too but you do not need to buy one for this recipe.
In a prep bowl add in all the garlic sauce ingredients – mayo, Greek yogurt, lemon juice, minced garlic, salt and pepper. Stir well and place in the fridge until the chicken goes on the grill.
I take it out of the fridge right before I put the chicken on the grill so it gives it time to come closer to room temperature.
The chicken
While we recommend serving this grilled chicken with the creamy garlic sauce, it does have a great flavor and mix of seasonings on it’s own.
Mix oil, parsley, oregano, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper in a small prep bowl.
I like to use a bag to coat the chicken, but you can use a large bowl. We quite often use chicken thawed from a freezer so we use the freezer bag (or Foodsaver bag) that it was frozen in.
Pour the seasoning/oil mix over the chicken breasts and toss to coat. Set aside until the grill is hot and ready.
Grilling and serving
Preheat the grill to medium high heat. I like it to be about 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Please note these instructions are for a gas grill, adjust accordingly for charcoal. We have not made them on charcoal so I am sorry to say we cannot offer cook times.
Once the grill is heated to about 400 degrees, add the chicken breasts to the grill. You want to cook them for about 6-7 minutes on each side. Cook until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Once the chicken is up to temperature, remove from the grill and allow it to rest for about 5-10 minutes before serving. You can pour the creamy garlic sauce on the grilled chicken breasts after resting or serve at the table as a dipping sauce (we recommend using it as a dipping sauce.)
